I used four individual bunny blocks to make a mini quilt.
Here are the complete instructions:
Materials
- 1/4 yard or fat quarter of two (2) fabrics. One for the bunny rabbit and one for the background
- Thread for sewing
- Fabrics scraps for bunny eyes and nose
- #8 Perle cotton in black, or embroidery floss
Tools
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilter's ruler
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Pressing surface
- Embroidery needle suitable for thread used for stitching
- Scissors
- Removable fabric marker, I used a Frixion pen
Instructions
- Cut the fabrics as outlined in the fabric requirements chart above.
- Sew the two ear pieces and the background fabric right sides together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- Sew the ear pieces to the bunny rabbit face and the bottom background fabric piece.
- Sew the side background pieces to the bunny rabbit face piece.
- Here are four bunny rabbit quilt blocks ready for adding the faces.
- I use fusible backed fabric for many of my projects and have a bin of scraps that have fusible already on the back. You can just cut these from any fabric and use a glue stick to have them hold until you can sew them to your quilt block.
Cut out small hearts for the bunny rabbit noses. I like to freehand the cut with my Fiskars spring-loaded scissors.
- Eyes can be appliquéd or embroidered or both! I did two with fusible appliqué and two with only embroidery. Here I used a polka dot fabric for the eyes. I fussy cut out around the dots to give the eyes more personality.
- Next, lay the eyes and noses that have been cut out on your bunny rabbit blocks. If they are backed with fusible web, now is the time to fuze them in place. If you are going to sew them to the bunny face, now is the time to sew them in place. Here are my eyes and noses placed and ready to fuse.
- Now you are ready to draw in the rest of the facial features. I like to use a Frixion pen. The ink comes out with the heat of your iron. NOTE: Always test on a scrap of your fabric to make sure it comes out. If you are interested in other ways to mark your fabric, check out our article on 'Marking Your Fabric for Sewing and Quilting'.
- I embroidered the rest of the face features with #8 Perle cotton. For the eye lashes and whiskers, I just used a single straight stitch. For the eyelids and the mouths, I used a stem stitch.
