The basic supplies you need to get started are needle, thread, fabric and scissors. Our ancestors made quilts all by hand – cutting the pieces with scissors, then sewing together by hand and hand quilting. It’s a great way to get started (if you’d like).
Today’s quilters have a variety of tools to make patchwork easier – sewing machines, rotary cutters, cutting mats and quilters rulers. The most important tool (in my opinion) for quilting is a good iron and pressing surface. Oh, and the second most important tool? A seam ripper! All you need are some basic tools to get started.
There are a variety of quilting techniques. Try them all and find which you prefer.
You don’t need to start with a big quilt. Start with a small quilt to get comfortable with the terminology and quilting process. Small projects are a great way to try out basic techniques.
