How to Make a Fabric Carrot
Learn how to make fabric carrots with our step-by-step instructions with photos. We show you how to make them any size, and several options to create the carrot top!
Here is our fabric carrot tutorial:
Materials
- Fabric scraps to make the carrot. Carrots come in a variety of colors - orange, purple, and white!
- Carrot top options: Green fabric scraps, Green Easter basket grass, Green yarn, Green ribbon - or anything else you think might work to make a carrot top!
- Polyester filling - you'll only need a little bit to stuff the carrots, also referred to as fiber fill
- Thread to match your carrot
Tools
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- If using a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler
- Sewing machine
- Hand sewing needle
- Thread clips or embroidery scissors for hand sewing
- OPTIONAL: Bodkin, knitting needle or chopstick
Instructions
- Start by folding your fabric in half lengthwise. I used an orange fabric.

- Cut a triangle along the fold.

- With the right sides together, stitch along the raw edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

- Here is the carrot sewn.

- Turn the carrot right side out. I like to use a bodkin. Here is some polyfill and strips of green fabric that I painted.
Stuff the carrot with the polyfill. I use my bodkin to make sure some gets into the bottom of the carrot.
- Now it is time to add your carrot top. Start to fold in the top edge of the carrot about 1/4-inch. Thread your needle and use a running stitch around the top of the carrot. .

- Take the strips one at a time and stitch them to the top with the running stitch.

- When you've stitched all of the carrot top strips to the top, pull on your thread to close the carrot top.

- Tie off your thread and you have a finished fabric carrot!

Notes
Great scrap-busting project! Make carrots of different sizes with different tops!
Add a little curve when cutting to make different carrot shapes!
OPTION: You can use a hot glue gun to close the top of the carrot. I just prefer to stitch them closed.
Tips for stuffing your carrots:
- Take just a small piece of polyfill to start. Push it gently into the end of the carrot with a bodkin. If you don't have a bodkin, a chopstick or knitting needle works. Just be gentle! You don't want to pop the stitches in the end of the carrot.
- You can add weight with poly pellets. I don't recommends beand or rice, as they can attract bugs.

What are some ideas for the carrot tops?
Not sure if you want to sew in fabric strips one at a time like we did above? Try cutting a piece of green fabric about 3-inches wide and as tall as you want your greens:

I cut strips vertically on the piece of fabric, leaving about 1/4-inch uncut. Then I ran a running stitch on the uncut part of the fabric. Pull the thread to gather the carrot top. Tuck this into the top of the carrot and secure with a needle and thread.
Another option for carrot tops is to take strips of fabric and sew through all of them before attaching to the carrot.

You can use this same technique using Easter basket grass. Cut several strips of the grass the length you’d like your carrot tops. Line up one end of each of the strips. Run your needle and thread through the ends and tuck them in your carrot top.

You can use beige linen for a rustic look, or worn-out jeans. Depends on what your version of rustic looks like!
Can you make fabric carrots without a sewing machine?
Yes! You can use a glue gun instead of sewing the seam. Or, you can quickly and easily hand stitch the carrot seam.
