Log Cabin Prayer Flag

Log Cabin Prayer Flag

Art Quilts Foundation Piecing Sewingby Chardel Blaine

My friend, Salem, Oregon, artist Dayna Collins, spearheaded an art installation last summer that she called โ€œScattered by the Windโ€. This Log Cabin Prayer Flag, โ€œPraying for Shelterโ€ was my small contribution to the effort.

The traditional log cabin quilt block depicts hearth and home. A red square usually anchors the center of the most familiar log cabin blocks, representing a warm fire. The fabric strips added around the square represents the log walls that protect the family within. My center square (off-center, I know) symbolizes how modern families mix cultures and may not fit perfectly within preconceived notions. The logs also represent diversity with fabrics that come from cultures all over the world. They don’t “match”, but together they create their own kind of unique beauty.

About Scattered by the Wind

The project was part of Salem Art Associationโ€™s Project Space. Throughout the summer, artists created flags at several community flag-making days as well as by invitation through social media. Over 300 flags were hanging on September 3, 2014, and sold with proceeds going to art programming at Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility. The kids at Hillcrest had a great art program as a result.

You can learn more about the project and see more colorful pictures on the Scattered by the Wind Facebook Page.
