Use your scraps or a jelly roll to make this lovely heart for your Valentine!
Here is our scrappy heart quilt block pattern.
Materials
- 2-1/2 inch wide fabric scraps for the heart
- 4-1/2 inch x 12-1/2 inch piece for the background fabric
- Thread for sewing
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Quilters ruler
- Removable fabric marker - I used a Frixion pen
- Iron
- Pressing surface
Instructions
- Start by cutting all of your fabric according to the fabric requirements above.
- First step is to mark a diagonal line on the small background squares on the wrong side of your fabric. This will be our sewing line when we place them on the fabrics to form the heart shape. I used a Frixion pen. NOTE: Always test your removable marker on a scrap of fabric first!
- Lay all of the pieces out for the heart quilt block. It may not look like a heart right now, but it will come together quickly!
- Next step is to place the small white background squares on the pieces they will be sewn to with right sides together. Make sure to line up the diagonal lines so that the background goes to the outside of the quilt block.
- Take each piece to your sewing machine and sew on the drawn line.
- Trim each piece 1/4-inch from the sewn line on the OUTSIDE edge. (Ask me why I emphasize this . . . trim on the wrong side and you'll be doing it again!)
- Press your seams. To learn more, read our article about pressing seams for quilting. Place the blocks back in their places on your table. I find it easier only to sew one or two seams at a time for this project. Press and put them back in their place on your table.
- Next, take the two sets of 2-1/2 inch squares for the heart and sew them right sides together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance and press the seams to your preference. All of the rest of the seams will be sewn with 1/4-inch seam allowances, right sides together, and press after each step.
- Now, take the adjacent rectangle to each set of small squares and sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press.
- Take the sewn squares and add the rectangle shapes to the left on your table. Sew and press.
- For the center sewn piece, add the rectangle above. For my heart, it is the bright red piece in the center. Then add the background large square to the top sewn together piece, and the right rectangle to the center sewn piece.
- Can you see your heart quilt block coming together? We're almost done! Now sew the bottom heart rectangle to the center sewn piece.
- Sew the left heart strip with background triangles to the center heart shape. Then sew the top sewn strip and then add the left strip. And, your heart qult block is finished!
