Learn how to make a shamrock quilt block in our step-by-step directions with our free pattern.
This shamrock quilt block pattern is perfect for celebrating St. Patrick's Day and bringing a little luck to you!
This simple little shamrock block is a perfect project for quilters of all skill levels. Here are our step-by-step instructions:
Materials
- Here are the fabric requirements to make this quilt block:
- Fat quarter of green fabric for the shamrock
- - Cut three (3) 6-1/2 inch green squares
- - Cut one piece 1-1/2 inch x 9-inches for the stem unit
- Fat quarter of fabric for the background
- - Cut nine (9) 2-1/2 inch squares
- - Cut one 7-inch square
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Quilter's ruler
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Iron
- Pressing surface
- Removable fabric marker, I used a Frixion pen
Instructions
- Start by cutting out your fabrics as detailed above under materials.
- Next, on each of the small background squares mark a diagonal line with a removable fabric marker. NOTE: Always test your marker on a scrap of fabric before using. I used a Frixion pen which removes with an iron.
- Place three of the smaller and marked squares in three corners of your 6-inch leaf squares, with right sides of your fabric together. Make sure the diagonal line goes from side-to-side. This will be your stitching line.
- Sew along the marked lines for all three corners on all three blocks.
- Now is time to trim the corners. Using a quilter's ruler, put the 1/4-inch line on your stitching line and cut the outside triangles off. This will give you a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- Press to your preference. For more about pressing your seams in quilting, check out our article. Here are the three leaves for the shamrock all pressed.
- Next we'll make the stem block. Cut the 7-inch square of background fabric in half diagonally.
- Here is the layout for this block. We'll be sewing the 9-inch strip in the middle of the background fabric.
- Start by sewing the stem to one of the triangles we just made from the 7-inch square.
- Next, sew the other triangle to the otherside of the rectangle.
- Press the seams to your preference. Now is time to trim this to a 6-1/2 inch square. TIP: find the 3-1/4 inch mark on your quilter's ruler. Place it in the middle of your block and trim the four sides. I find this is the easiest way to trim up a quilt block making sure that the stem stays in the center.
- All four patches are made for the shamrock quilt block!
- Sew the rows together. Press your seams.
- Now sew the two rows together, matching you seam lines. Press and your shamrock quilt block is finished!
