Spotlight: Amy Davis of Monster Dance Designs‏

DIY Home Décor Occasions Spotlightby Create Whimsy

Amy Davis is a glass artist who teaches glass sand blasting and designs glass patterns for a local studio. Her glass designs reflect her experiences and life, bringing unique designs to the glassware industry.

Amy Davis

Tell us a little bit about you and what you do.

You could say I’m a bit of an odd duck. Thankfully though, I’m not alone.

As Monster Dance Designs, I create etched glassware and kitchen accessories for those folks who are also marching to their own beat. I primarily sell online and to shops all over the country, with a few shows throughout the year in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Although I’m best known for my Dinosaurs, I’m continually amazed with the creative custom design ideas my fans come up with. I love bringing them to life! Currently, I’m developing a collection of fabric prints for kitchen textiles to complement my glassware, as well as a line of wedding options appealing to your not-so-average bride.

What made you interested in making etched glassware?

I majored in art and history with every intention of becoming a preservational archivist. Not long after, I moved to Florida (mostly in order to surf) and found myself working as a pattern maker in an architectural glass shop. Thanks to some great mentors, I learned to design and build stained glass windows and how to etch with sandblasting. Down the rabbit hole I went! Glass as an artistic medium fascinates me in a way nothing else ever has–it’s messy, technical, and wonderfully unpredictable at times.

What inspires you?

I’m a nerd of many flavors, and many of my interests find their way onto the glass. Astronomy, science, and history feature heavily, as does pop culture, sci-fi, and my favorite games. I also love the thrill of a new experiment. My five year old daughter and original Monster Dancer provides endless ideas!

What other hobbies do you have?

We are a gaming family! While it might not count as a hobby, I’m helping my husband launch a game store. I’m currently into freeform embroidery and block print carving. Most often, though, I’ll just have my nose in a book or three.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

It’s between “To Thine Own Self Be True” and “Always Pack Extra Socks”.
