Stitchers love to stitch, and they love to receive handmade gifts. We have put together an embroidery gift guide with projects, tools and supplies that are good for the embroiderers in your life, or projects you can embroider yourself and give as gifts! From kits to patterns to threads to books to finished gifts, let our favorites inspire you to make a handmade holiday.
You can never go wrong with gifting some new embroidery threads, some new sharp needles or a new pair of embroidery scissors – an embroiderer can never have enough!
Consider some specialty threads like metallic or a nice variegated thread. Pick a color they love, or a color they don’t include in their work very often. Sometimes it is that different color thread that makes a piece sing when it is done!
As for needles, yes, they can go dull. There is nothing like starting to stitch a new project with a new sharp needle. And, make sure they have the right needle for the projects. There are different needs for different use cases. My favorite ‘go-to’ embroidery needle is a crewel embroidery needle. It has a nice larger eye than a traditional embroidery needle so it is easier to thread, especially when I’m working with Perle cottons.
One more essential that needs to be included in an embroidery gift guide is a good light!

The Geometry of Hand-Sewing: A Romance in Stitches and Embroidery from Alabama Chanin and The School of Making
When Natalie Chanin and her Alabama Chanin and The School of Making teams began to look at needlework closely, they realized all stitches are based on geometric grid systems—and by using grids as guides, they could make learning stitches, even seemingly elaborate ones, as easy as child’s play.
In The Geometry of Hand-Sewing Chanin presents their breakthrough method, featuring illustrated instructions (for both right- and left-handed stitchers) for more than 100 stitches—from the most basic straight and chain to the more fanciful feather and herringbone; photos of both right and wrong sides; and guidelines for modifying stitches to increase one’s repertoire further. To simplify learning, the book also includes two plastic stitching cards die-cut with the grids on which every stitch in the book is based.
