Spotlight: Chet Phillips, Illustrator

Spotlightby Create Whimsy

Chet Phillips uses his talents to interpret the world around him and create new and unexpected art. He is inspired by discovering the beauty or humor in otherwise normal surroundings.

Tell us a little bit about you and what you do.

Chet Phillips

I present my slightly off-center view of the world through my digital scratch-board style illustrations. For 30+ years my work has been showcased by advertising agencies, design firms, corporations, book publishers, magazines and movie studios. Recently I’ve turned my efforts towards personal projects that include limited edition hand made books (in collaboration with my talented bookbinding wife Julie), trading card sets and print editions. I sell my work through online shops, comic conventions and pop culture art gallery shows.

What made you interested in illustrations and painting?

Since a very young age, I’ve been fascinated by the ability of artists to not only interpret the world around them, but also create new and unexpected meanings.

What other hobbies do you have?

Reading well-written imaginative books and watching movies. Also, enjoying the limitless wealth of fellow artists’ work, both past and present.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Stay true to what you’re passionate about in your art.
