Quick and easy, make a mug rug from a charm pack for your cup of coffee or tea, as well as a wine coaster where everyone can keep track of whose is whose!
These are sometimes referred to as a wine glass slipper (or wine cozy) because the base of the wine glass just slips in the fabric, which makes it stay with your wine glass where ever you take it! No more losing which wine glass is yours! I love that these double as a mug rug – colorful rugs for your coffee or tea cup!
These mug rug / coasters are so easy and perfect gifts — just pick fabric patterns and colors especially for the receiver! One charm pack makes seven (7) coasters. Also, these are a super quick and easy project – perfect for beginners.

How to Make Mug Rugs from a Charm Pack
These coasters do double duty! They are mug rugs that also stay on the bottom of your footed wine glasses. An easy project from one charm pack of fabric.
Go ahead, break into that charm pack that has been sitting around for a while and make some mug rug coasters!
Materials
- One charm pack (or 42 five-inch squares of fabric)
- Seven (7) 5" squares of batting
- Thread
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Ironing board
Instructions
- Start with a charm pack, or cut 5" x 5" squares of fabric. You will need six (6) squares for each mug rug coaster. Cut your batting so that all of your materials are ready.
- Pick four (4) coordinating fabrics that will be woven together to form the top of the coaster. Then, pick one fabric for the inside and one for the bottom. Press the four (4) fabrics that will be used on the top in half. Here is my batting, bottom of coaster, top of coaster and the four (4) for the top all pressed and ready to sew.
- Layer your fabrics and batting, the fabric for the inside first, then the batting and then the bottom (outside) of the coaster, with the wrong sides of these fabrics to the batting. Here the red gingham will be the inside, the dark blue the bottom of the coaster.
- Lay out the four (4) pressed fabrics that will be the top of your coaster. Weave them over-and-under so there is an opening for the foot of a wine glass.
- Lay the woven folded pieces on top of the sandwich you already made, on top of the fabric you want on the outside bottom. Pin or clip to keep in place.
- Sew 1/4" seam allowance all around your coasters.
- Clip the corners and turn right side out.
- I made a LOT of coasters at once. Here is a pile ready to be trimmed and turned.
- Once turned, press and they are done! If you'd like you can topstitch all around the outside edge. For these, I left the turned and pressed edge.
- Use different fabric combinations so that guests know which wine glass is theirs!

The finished wine coaster. I love how the wine glasses just tuck into the fabric. You’ll know which wine glass is yours!
Bonus! These wine coaster / mug rugs are washable and environmentally friendly! Reduce waste (and your fabric stash) by making these instead of using paper napkins.
Don’t have charm packs lying around? Cut 5-inch squares of fabric from your fabric scraps. Each wine coaster / mug rug uses five (5) 5-inch squares of fabric. Need them larger? or smaller? Cut larger or smaller squares. Don’t forget – the finished coaster / mug rug will be 1/2-inch smaller than the cut squares due to seam allowances. This is a perfect stash-buster fabric.
