Charming Mug Rug and Wine Coasters
Quick and easy, make a mug rug for your cup of coffee or tea, as well as a wine coaster where everyone can keep track of whose is whose! If you make each one a little different, you’ll be able to keep track of your wine! It’s so easy and a perfect gift — just pick fabrics and colors for the receiver! Pick one charm pack and then you can make these charming mug rug and wine coasters!
Start with a charm pack, or cut 5″ x 5″ squares from your stash, cutting 6 squares for each rug/coaster. A charm pack makes 7 coasters. If you want to make 8 coasters, cut 8 5″ x 5″ squares from your stash for the inside fabric. This fabric will be the least visible, so it’s okay if it doesn’t match exactly. Then cut 7 or 8 5″ x 5″ squares from your batting scraps.
Pick 4 squares that will be woven together to form the top of the coaster, then pick one for the inside and one for the bottom. Below you’ll see I picked the red gingham and dark blue for the bottom and inside, then added 4 bright prints for the top.
Then press the 4 fabrics used for the top in half.
Layer your fabrics and batting for the base, with the one you want on the inside of the coaster on the bottom, then the batting, and then the fabric you want on the outside (bottom) of the coaster on top. Here, the red gingham will be inside of my coaster and the dark blue will be the bottom.
Lay out the 4 pressed fabrics that will be the top of your coaster. Then weave them over-and-under so there is an opening for the base of the wine glass.
Now lay the woven folded pieces on top of your base. They should lay on top of the fabric you want on the outside bottom. Then pin or clip to keep in place.
Now sew all around all edges of your coasters.
Next, clip the corners and turn inside out.
Here are all of the pretty coasters I made in just a few hours, ready to be trimmed and turned.
Press and you have unique and colorful coasters, that work as mug rugs and, if you use different fabric combinations, as wine charms!
