Spotlight: Carmen Aberasturi of Lemon Glaze Ceramics

DIY Home Décor Pottery-Ceramics Spotlightby Create Whimsy

Carmen Aberasuri uses her potters wheel or hand-forms her ceramics to make Lemon Glaze Ceramics collection of handmade, minimalist homeware that leaves behind traces of her workmanship.

Carmen Aberasturi of LemonGlaze Ceramics

Tell us a little bit about you and what you do.

I’m Carmen Aberasturi, a Peruvian-born ceramic artist who has been living and working in North Texas for 23 years. My designs focus on a simple, natural beauty and a narrow color palette of neutrals and a very small handful of pastels and brights. Though I do throw small pots, the real joy is hand-building more organic pieces. My customers respond strongly to the fact that they can see my hand in the more organic forms of my serving pieces and pinch bowls.

What made you interested in making your amazing ceramics?

There’s something so gratifying about making things with your hands. Peruvian culture has an ancient history of ceramics and fine craft. I’m glad to be continuing that tradition.

What inspires you?

I’m always inspired by nature and travel. I just got back from Big Sur and am going back soon to Tulum. The colors of the ocean are so serene and help to inspire the color palette and form of my pieces. I also listen to a lot of music and look forward to Denton’s Jazz Fest every year.

What other hobbies do you have?

In addition to the ceramic pieces I create, I also love painting. I do a lot of tile painting as well as watercolor.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Always do your best!
