This embroidered wool reader cover was a staff challenge at work (in a quilt shop). Each of us made an eReader cover using our favorite techniques and materials.
I love doing hand embroidery on wool, so I designed this fanciful garden of flowers and adorned it with blanket stitches, French knots, Lazy Daisy, double scattered seed and feather stitches. The back of the ereader cover is wool, too, and the over dyed hounds-tooth is decorated with scattered fly stitches.
I didn’t really have a plan when I started this project. I began with stemmed flowers, cut freehand. Felted wool is such a joy to work with. The edges don’t ravel, so I didn’t have to fuse or turn under edges as with cotton appliqué. I discovered one neat little trick about wool appliqué. I use felting needles to baste the pieces in place instead of pins. Light felting holds the pieces securely in place during the appliqué process, and there are no pins to distort the surface or catch the threads while stitching. And I don’t have to stop and remove pins as I stitch. After the flowers, the design needed hilly ground and wavy sky.
Later, I can attach a handle and a clasp and transform it into a small purse. It is fully lined with a cotton print fabric, so it’s ready to hold something different whenever I am ready to give it a new job.
