How to Make a Simple Christmas Tree Ornament with Scraps
Quick and easy sewing project! Bust into your scraps and your button box and whip up some of these cute ornaments for your tree.
Use them as gift tags on gifts!
Materials
- Scraps of fabric
- 6-inches of ribbon, trim or midi braid for hanging
- One (1) button
- Thread for sewing
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter with pinking blade, or pinking scissors
- Cutting mat (if using rotary cutter)
- Hand sewing needle
Instructions
- Dig through your fabric scraps and pull out some to make these adorable Christmas tree ornaments. Using a pinking blade on your rotary cutter, cut out tree-shaped triangles. Have fun with different sizes and shapes of trees. Tall and skinny, nice and wide - they all work! I like using the pinking blade on my rotary cutter to give the ragged edge to the tree ornament.

- With wrong sides together, sew the two sides of the tree with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

- At the top of the tree, turn and sew the second side.

- Take a wee bit of polyfill or wadding and stuff the tree. Don't stuff it full, just a little bit to give it some poof.

- Now, sew the bottom of the tree closed, sewing 1/4-inch from the bottom.

- Take your 6-inch piece of ribbon and your button. First, sew the ribbon to the top of the tree by hand. I found it easier to sew by hand. The ribbon wanted to slip around under the presser foot.

- Then, sew on the button over the edge of the ribbon on the front of the ornament to finish your Christmas tree.!

Notes
You can use pinking shears instead of a rotary cutter. And, you can just cut the sides with a straight cutting tool - scissors or rotary cutter.
I like the pinked edge of the ornament.

Ideas and Tips for Making Scrap Happy Christmas Tree Ornaments
Use novelty prints to make personalized ornaments – fish fabric for the fisherman in your life, soccer prints for the soccer player in your life. And, a good use for those novelty buttons you bought that are just sitting in your button box looking for a project!

Try different types of fabrics! I think the ones made from corduroy scraps are some of my favorites! Scraps left over from costumes could be fun. Sparkly fabrics will catch the lights on your tree!
Perfect project to use up those single buttons at the bottom of your button box.
