Tassels are everywhere! Make your own tassels, save money and get what you really want! They are so easy to make — all you need is a box or piece of cardboard that you can wrap your thread, yarn, string or fabric around and a pair of scissors!
Use a bigger box or piece of cardboard to make longer tassels. Add more loops of the thread to make fatter tassels. Have fun with this quick project that can add some fun and a decorative touch to your home dec projects, maybe add a tassel to the top of a knit hat, or even to the bottom of a quilt!
How to Make a Tassel
Start with some yarn, string or thread and just begin wrapping around either a box or cardboard. For this tutorial, I’m using one skein of pearl cotton embroidery floss.

Beginning to wrap the thread around the box.
Keep winding the yarn/thread until you have as much as you’d like for your tassel. If you are using embroidery floss, I use an entire skein for each tassel. Leave about 20″ of floss to finish off your tassel.
When you are done winding the yarn, take a piece of the thread about 12″ long and tie off all of the threads. This becomes the top of your tassel. Make a good strong knot.
Tie it securely several times. Then, carefully slide the tassel off of the box.
Hold the yarn that you tied off at the top and carefully cut through the other end of the loops to make the bottom of the tassel.
If using floss, use the rest of your thread to do this next tie-off. If using a continuous thread or yarn, cut another piece of your yarn about 3x the length of your tassel.
Wrap a few times around the tassel and then knot off. Trim your threads. Here is a finished tassel!
You can use any kind of thread, yarn, string, fabric strips — anything you can wrap around a box or piece of cardboard. Have fun and add tassels to your home dec, quilt, clothing and accessories!
Add some bling to the top of your tassel. Here is how to make a beaded top tassel.
