How to Make a May Day Tin Can Basket

How to Make a May Day Tin Can Basket

DIY Home Décor Occasionsby Weezie

I love May Day. Maybe because it is the sign that spring is really here, and the flowers are beginning to bloom. Maybe because it is my birthday month. There is something about the tradition to leave flowers anonymously to brighten someone’s day. Here’s how to make a May Day tin can basket.

Traditionally, flowers were cut from gardens and wrapped in a paper cone and left on a door knob. I’ve shared how to make a May Day Flower Paper Cone in another story. I also wanted to be able to leave some water with the flowers, and decided I could brighten up a tin can with some paint and make a May Day Tin Can Basket.

You need to have an empty tin can. I spray painted it with a lovely deep pink, and then added a coat of sparkly pink on the outside to make it shiny and happy. I used a metal punch to punch two holes on opposite sides to thread the ribbon through.

Can painted in a glittery pink and holes punched on both sides

Take your ribbon and tie a big knot on the inside. Make sure the knot is big enough it won’t slip through the hole.

Add a ribbon to hang on the door. Tie a knot on the inside of the can.

Tie ribbon through the other side. The the ends into a nice bow.

Ribbon added, ready for flowers!

Add your flowers and make someone’s day by leaving some May Day flowers on their door!
