A great idea is to make each family member their own napkin ring from a favorite color or fabric design. When using cloth napkins, and resuing them at mealtime, you'll always know whose napkin is whose!
Materials
- Piece of fabric for the napkin ring cut to 9-inches x 5-inches
- Piece of batting cut 8-inches x 2-inches
- Thread for sewing
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Pressing surface or ironing board
Instructions
- Cut your fabric piece 9 x 5 and batting 8 x 2. This is a great way to use up batting scraps. You can join batting scraps by zigzagging them together - that's what I did for this project!
- Center the batting along one of the long edges of the fabric on the WRONG side of the fabric with raw edges aligned.
- Sew along the edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- Press the seam allowance towards the fabric.
- Then, fold the batting up and press again, forming the finished folded edge.
- Next, fold and press 1/4-inch along the other long edge. It's easier to do the major pressing on this now - ask me how I know!
- Now we'll form a ring. With right sides together, bring the short sides together and match the raw edges. There should be about 1/2-inch from the edge of the fabric to the edge of the batting. Sew right along the edge of the batting, with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. When you get to the end, open the folded edge you just pressed.
- Press the seam open.
- And, press the fold along the long edge again.
- Fold the pressed edge down to match the folded edge with batting to make a napkin ring. The folded edges should be aligned.
- Topstitch along the open edge with the two folded edges.
- Turn and topstitch the other edge.
- And, you have finished a fabric napkin ring!
