Handy Heart Potholder

Handy Heart Potholder

Sewingby Milo’s Mom

This fun project is the handy heart potholder. There are many versions out there now, but I think this is the original pattern designed by Eva Holen many years ago. It was really easy to make with the pattern instructions. The rick-rack is a cute addition along with the little button embellishment. (The button covers up a not so perfect binding seam). You could bind this like a tiny quilt, but I just zigzagged purchased seam binding to make it quick! I love the story of the Little Red Hen (I read it to my children years ago), so I just had to use this fabric!

I recommend Insul-Bright or a similar heat-resistant batting for one of the interior layers to protect your hands.

Make sure to add a loop so you can hang your potholder for easy access in your kitchen.

Try different fabric combinations, or make it all in the same fabric! This is a quick and easy sewing project for gift giving โ€” Christmas, Motherโ€™s Day, when someone moves into a new home, or just because you were thinking of them. Make it in colors that remind you of the recipient! Have some fun and use up some of your scraps. Or buy some special fabric to make this a pot holder that really does come from your heart.

I made another that doesn’t exactly match the Little Red Hen, but the colors and patterns work well together I think. And sometimes I need to protect both hands!
