Materials
- Leftover scraps of fabric with fusible web, enough to make a coaster (recommend 4 to 5-inch square)
- Piece of fused fabric for back of coaster
- Small piece of batting large enough for a coaster
- Thread for quilting and edging
Tools
- Iron
- Pressing surface
- Sewing machine
- Teflon sheet, sheet of release paper or parchment paper
- Rotary cutter and mat
Instructions
- Gather your materials and fused fabric scraps. Arrange these scraps fusible side down on a Teflon ironing sheet, sheet of release paper or parchment paper.
Be sure that all of the pieces are overlapping at least enough so that they will fuse together into a full sheet of fabric.
Press with an iron making sure that all pieces are connected to form a single sheet of fabric. - With your rotary cutter, square up the outside edges and cut the fabric into various widths.
- Trim up the outside edges. Rotate the pieces and cut strips in different widths from the other direction. Arrange the new strips on the release paper. Press, overlapping the edges, creating a new sheet of fabric.
- Continue to trim up the outside edges, slice into strips, rearrange the strips and press together on the release sheet until you are pleased with the design. For more interest, use the little trimmings on the top of the piece.
- Sandwich the fused top, thin batting and fused backing. Press to make a flat pancake. Trim up the outside edges. Quilt. Zig-zag around the outside edges and you are done!

Use these for “coasters” on your end tables, desks, coffee tables, even as placemats or table runners. When they get old and icky, throw them away and replace with the others you make.

I have always made things. Early on in my life because I couldn’t buy, then because I couldn’t stop, now because I treasure the “art” made with human hands and creative minds. If it requires a needle and “thread” then I’ve tried it.
At this phase of my life, I am devoting much of my energy to creative clothing, facilitating a class of marvelous, creative women who share a need for ideas, inspiration, techniques and each other to continue their journeys in the world of creativity.
I have grandchildren, a supportive and independent husband, treasured friends, and a new black convertible.
