Pledge of Allegiance Flag Quilt

Pledge of Allegiance Flag Quilt

Appliqué Fourth of July Machine Quiltingby Guest Contributor

I love to sew and often have more than one Bernina sewing and embroidery machine running at once. I do as many projects as I can by machine, including applique and embroidery. (“Hand” is a four-letter word in my sewing room.) This is my Pledge of Allegiance Flag Quilt that I made for my son. It’s appropriate any day of the year, but especially for Independence Day, Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, and Flag Day!

I like working with designs from Hoop Sisters. This is their Old Glory pattern. They are very consistent in their instructions, so I always get the result I expect. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with every designer. So that’s why I go back to Hoop Sisters often.

I like the zig-zag stripes on this flag. The design looks more complex, but it actually breaks it up into smaller, more manageable units. The quilt is easier to construct, and if I make a mistake on one unit (never happens – haha), I haven’t ruined the whole project.

I selected a white-on-white thread/fabric combination for the white stripes on the flag. I like the surprise you get when you get close to the quilt and see that the words are there. Others make this quilt with a creamy or tan thread that gives an aged look, or with red or blue to make a big contrast statement. I worked hard to make sure the intersections of my stripes matched, but if they don’t, maybe you can imagine that the flag is waving in a stronger breeze!

Long may she wave! The Pledge of Allegiance is embroidered with white thread in the white stripes of the flag – a reward for taking a closer look!
