Peachy Kawai finds inspiration for her mixed-media art on beach walks, snorkeling, hiking, and surfing around the island of Kawa’i! You’ll find her drawing, painting, crocheting, working with clay, and more!

How did you get started making art? Why do you do it?
My love of art started at an early age and was encouraged when I attended a Waldorf school. I learned through head, heart, and hands to examine the world around me and express myself freely. I can’t see myself not doing art—it’s a part of my being!
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
As an artist I am open minded and multifaceted—I try not to judge any creative idea that arises within me.

When was the first time that you remember realizing that you are a creative person?
As a child I remember making up stories and characters and creating little books with printer paper and staples to display my ideas and share them with my parents.

How does your environment influence your creativity?
Living on Kaua’i has increased my creativity exponentially! I can find inspiration on a beach walk, snorkel, hike, picnic, surfing, etc.

What different creative media do you use in your work?
I use any and all creative media in my work, including drawing, painting, yarn, denim, cotton, clay, etc.

Do you plan your work out ahead of time, or do you just dive in with your materials and start playing?
I move freely into different artworks and media depending on my mood, the materials available, and how much time I have that day.

How do you manage your creative time? Do you schedule start and stop times? Or work only when inspired?
I typically work on my art when I feel inspired, and sometimes my mom and I will brainstorm ideas and make notes.

Describe your creative space.
My creative area is inside my bedroom. I love listening to the birds sing with the waterfall flowing off the lanai. I also carry a notebook so I can sketch on a beach walk or a botanical tour.

Working across many different media, how do you organize all of your creative supplies?
My creative supplies are stored all over my bedroom in plastic bins (to protect from the salt air and bugs). I try to keep my desk clear of supplies so I can be creative.

How often do you start a new project? Do you work actively on more than one project at a time?
I work on many different projects at the same time—when inspiration strikes!

Can you tell us about the inspiration and process of one of your works? How does a new work come about?
A new piece of artwork can come to fruition if I just have a little inkling of an idea-when I listen closely and give that idea space to grow I’ll learn what media should be used to best express myself.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
The best piece of advice I’ve received is to ‘just start’ and to not hold any judgments.

Where can people see your work?
My work can be found at arts markets around the island and shops in Kilauea, Kapaa, Lihue, Hanapepe (in the ‘Western Most Bookstore in the US!). I also have a website, www.peachykauai.com, and an Instagram @peachy_kauai where I show finished pieces and parts of my creative process.
