How to Make Pom Poms with Yarn – 8 Different Ways

How to Make Pom Poms with Yarn – 8 Different Ways

Crafts DIY Christmas Ornamentsby Lynn Woll

No matter how you spell pom poms (pom-poms, or pompoms), they are all adorable fluffy balls of yarn that are used for embellishing clothing, accessories, and home dec projects.

In this article, I’ll show you eight (8) different ways to make pom poms out of yarn. I’ve used cardboard from bias tape, an empty toilet paper roll, a dinner fork, a carving fork, two fingers, four fingers, a skein of yarn (to make a really big one!), and a plastic pom pom maker.

Here are the tools used to make pom poms in this article. A toilet paper roll, piece of cardboard, pom pom maker tool, dinner fork and carving fork

The basics of making diy pom poms are:

  • Wrap yarn around something
  • Tie the middle of the wound up yarn
  • Cut the loops on either side
  • Fluff up the yarn

There are different methods of making them. You just need something to wrap the yarn around! It’s easy to make them in different sizes using some of the methods I’ve shown you in this article.

Is there a perfect pom pom? Or the best yarn for pom poms? The perfect pom pom is the one you make. You can make wool pom poms, pom poms with string, acrylic yarns – anything you can wrap around something!

How to make a pom pom with a dinner fork

Materials needed to make a pom pom with a dinner fork

  • Dinner fork with an even number of tines, my fork has four tines
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors

Learn how to make a yarn pom pom with a fork! Start by winding your yarn around the tines of your fork. For this pom pom, I wound this yarn 75 times around the tines. It’s important to have the opening below the yarn ball so that you can lace a piece of yarn through to tie the middle of the yarn ball.

Yarn wrapped around a dinner fork 75 times to make a pom pom

Below I have slipped one end of a piece of yarn through the middle opening in the fork. You can use any length of yarn. I like to have a piece of yarn that is at least 12-inches long. Depending on how you are using your pom pom, you may want the tie-off string longer.

Bring the yarn up over the top of the yarn ball and tie tightly.

Below is a picture of the tie tight around the yarn ball.

Beginning to slip the pom pom off of the dinner fork

Take your scissors and slip them inside between the fork and one of the sides of the loops and begin cutting. Try to cut in the middle of the loop. This is where a sharp pointed scissor makes the job easier.

Below I’ve cut one side of the loops and ready to cut the other side.

One side of the pom pom made on a dinner fork has all of the loops cut

Cut the loops on both sides of the middle tie-off. Take the pom pom off the end of the fork. I like to give the middle tie one more tight knot. If your knot is not tight, you might loose your yarns.

Make sure that the securing tie is tight on the pom pom made on a dinner fork

Now it’s time to fluff your pom pom and trim up some of the longer yarns. Below you’ll see the pom pom is fluffed but some of the yarns are longer and messy.

How to make a pom pom with a carving fork

Why a carving fork? It is much larger than a dinner fork and it only has two tines so it is easier to tie off the center of the pom pom.

Materials needed to make a pom pom with a carving fork

  • Carving fork with two tines
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors

Start by wrapping the yarn around the fork tines.

How to make a pom pom with a piece of cardboard

This is the way our mom used to make pom poms when I was growing up. She would use the piece of cardboard that comes in the package of bias tape or rick rack.

The benefit of using a piece of cardboard is that you can make a pom pom of any size. The finished size depends on the width of your cardboard.

Materials needed for making pom poms with cardboard

  • Piece of cardboard
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors

Start by winding your yarn around the piece of cardboard. For this pom pom I’m using a boucle yarn.

Beginning to make a pom pom with a piece of cardboard and yarn

I’ve wrapped the yarn around 75 times.

Yarn wrapped around piece of cardboard

With this method, there isn’t a way to tie off the center of the pom pom until we take the yarn off of the cardboard.

For this pom pom, I took an extra step. The boucle yarn is thick and fluffy. I wanted to make sure I knew where to put my scissors to cut the loops. I took two pieces of kitchen string and slipped them inside the yarn bundle and pulled each to one side. The strings will give me guides for cutting the loops. I’ll be able to slip the bundle of yarn off of the cardboard to tie off the middle. And then use the strings to guide my scissors.

Slip two pieces of string along the side loops when using fluffy yarn like boucle

Next, I gently slipped the yarn bundle off of the cardboard, leaving the strings inside. Then, take a length of your yarn and tie it around the middle of the bundle to secure the pom pom.

Tying the middle of the yarn making sure to keep the strings to the outside edges of the loops

Tie it tight.

Holding the yarn by the center and pulling both ends of one of the strings to be able to get the scissors in to cut the loops

Pull the strings to the outside on both sides. Slip your scissors into the bundle along side the string to cut the loops.

You can cut your own cardboard template any size you’d like. The finished dimension of your pom pom will be approximately the width of your piece of cardboard.

How to make a pom pom with a toilet paper roll

Yes, you read that right, a toilet paper roll! When you are tossing the empty roll into the recycling bin do you think “I should be able to use toilet paper rolls for something”!

You can also use an empty paper towel roll, but they are much longer and not as easy to handle.

Materials needed to make a pom pom with a toilet paper roll

  • Empty toilet paper roll
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors

Wrap your yarn around the toilet paper roll. For this pom pom I’m using some leftover rug yarn. It is a sturdy yarn and holds its shape.

How to make a pom pom with two fingers

All you have is some yarn? You can still make pom poms! By wrapping the yarn around your pointer finger and your middle finger you can make a nice small pom pom.

Materials needed to make a pom pom with your fingers

  • Your pointer and middle fingers
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors
Begin a two finger pom pom by wrapping yarn around your pointer and middle fingers

Continue wrapping until you have as much yarn as you’d like. Slip a tie off yarn through your two fingers.

Bring the ends of the tie off yarn to the top of your fingers and tie as tightly as you can with one hand. This is where it would be nice to have someone helping you.

Here I am holding onto the pom pom yarn while trying to get the tying yarn wrapped around between the two fingers

Slide the pom pom off of your fingers. Hold the center of the yarn bundle and tie it tighter.

How to make a pom pom with your hand

Love the idea of using your fingers but want a bigger pom pom? Use your entire hand!

Materials needed to make a pom pom with your hand

  • Your hand
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors

Wrap the yarn around all four fingers.

Here is the other side to show how the tie off piece of yarn is between the two fingers

Slip the yarn bundle off of your hand and tighten the center ties.

For this pom pom, since it is so large I wanted a really secure knot. I turned over the yarn bundle and did a second knot.

How to make a pom pom from a skein of yarn

Want BIG pom poms? Take an entire skein of yarn to make one! I found this skein of yarn at the local dollar store and thought I’d give it a try. If it didn’t work, I wouldn’t be out much.

Making a pom pom from a skein of yarn start with a skein of yarn

Take off the label, and cut a piece of yarn that is about 20 – 30 inches long from one end. Tie it around the middle of the skein of yarn. I tied it from one side, flipped it over, pulled tight again, and gave it a double knot.

Making a pom pom from a skein of yarn tie tightly around the middle of the skein

Start cutting one of the ends.

Making a pom pom from a skein of yarn beginning to cut into the ends of the skein

It does make a mess! Keep cutting.

Making a pom pom from a skein of yarn beginning to trim the yarn

Below I’ve cut both ends of the skein. Some of the loops near the center I just cut the loops open. It’s messy and needs quite a bit of trimming to be a nice and tidy pom pom!

Making a pom pom from a skein of yarn still needing some serious trimming

Below is the finished pom pom made from a skein of yarn. This took me about 10 minutes to make. The finished pom pom is about 6-inches in diameter. I’m headed back to buy more inexpensive yarn to make more. These will be fun on the tree this holiday season!

How to make a pom pom using a plastic maker

Plastic pom pom makers come in a variety of sizes. Here are the sizes I have in my collection of tools.

Showing a variety of sizes of pom pom makers

Why would you want to buy (and use) another tool to create? The benefit of the pom pom maker is that you do less trimming to make a perfectly round pom pom.

The downside is that you can’t make them any size you want. You are limited to the size of the makers. Also, you can only fill them so full with yarn, limiting the fullness and fluffiness of your pom pom.

You can buy a set of pom pom makers for a variety of popular sizes.

Materials needed to make a pom pom with a plastic maker

  • Plastic pom pom maker, I used a Clover pom pom maker
  • Yarn
  • Sharp scissors, I use Karen Buckley Perfect Scissors

To start, open your pom pom maker. It has two sets of arms. Flip open the arms with the tabs.

Open two of the curved arms on the pom pom maker tool

Here is the pom pom maker fully open.

To start a pom pom with a maker open the curved arms

Start with arms on one side of the maker. Holding the two arms on one side, wrap your yarn around the half of the donut. For this pom pom I’m using two different yarns to make a two-color pom pom.

Begin wrapping the two yarns around the two arms of the pom pom maker tool

Gently adjust the yarn to fill the first wrap evenly around the two arms.

Here I am showing the wrapping in progress around the two curved arms of the pom pom maker tool

Continue wrapping and fill the entire center of the donut with yarn. Don’t overfill or the arms won’t close on the maker. Below you can see I can add a few more loops around the maker.

Here I am wrapping a pink and white yarn simultaneously around two of the arms for one side of the pom pom

Below the yarn is perfect. See how it is flat across the top?

The first side of the pom pom maker is loaded with yarn

Fold the two arms with the yarn on them down to the base of the maker. This will secure your yarn until you have wrapped the other side of the maker.

Once one side of the pom pom maker is loaded with yarn, close the arms to the main maker

Holding the base of the maker with the first set of arms filled with yarn, begin wrapping the other set of arms with your yarn.

I then started wrapping the yard around the other two arms of the pom pom maker

Below the second set of arms are filled perfectly with yarn.

The second set of arms on the pom pom maker are loaded and ready to close

When the second set of arms is full, fold them back to the base of the pom pom maker. So cute. Nice and tidy yarn wrapped around the pom pom maker.

Here is the closed pom pom maker all full of the pink and white yarns

Next, it is time to cut your yarn. For this method of making pom poms you really need sharp scissors. You’ll see a little groove on the side between the two arms. Staring at the beginning of one of the sides, slip the end of your scissors into the groove and begin cutting the loops.

Putting my scissor points in the opening on the side of the pom pom maker tool to cut the loops apart

Continue cutting in the groove until all of the loops have been cut.

Almost finished cutting the loops on the pink and white pom pom

Next step, take a piece of yarn to tie off your pom pom. Place it in the groove around the base of the maker.

Below is a different view of tying off the middle of the pom pom.

Here I'm pulling the tie-off yarn around tightly to secure the pom pom

Pull tight and tie a knot.

Next, open the arms and release the yarn

Once the knot is done open the curved arms

What type of yarn is best to make pom poms?

Any type of yarn can be used to make pom poms. If you knit or crochet, this is a perfect project to use up your scraps and ends of yarn. Or ask a friend for their leftover yarn!

You can use inexpensive acrylic yarn found at big box stores or craft store, or shop your local yarn shop for wool yarn in yummy colors and other fibers to use for your pom poms.

As you can see from the examples I made for this article, I used some thicker yarns and some thinner yarns. You can use more than one yarn to make a different look in your finished pom pom. Play around with different colors and have fun!

Do I have to use yarn to make pom poms?

No! Some of the cutest pom poms are made with other materials.

Make some big tulle pom poms that would be perfect for decorating a wedding or baby shower.

Use up some of your fabric scraps but cutting or tearing lengths of fabric into narrow strips to make your pom poms.

Make tissue paper pom poms using the same method. Take a package of tissue paper and cut a 1 to 2-inch strip across the bottom of the folds of paper. Tie a string around the middle. Cut through the paper loops on the sides. Fluff open the tissue paper! A perfect home decor project!

Tips for making pom poms

  • Use a tapestry needle to thread the tie-off yarn through the fork or your fingers.
  • To make a really dense pom pom, use a thick yarn and wrap it more times. Trim it closer to the middle of the pom pom.
  • For really fluffy pom poms, start with a fluffy yarn, like the boucle yarn pom pom I made with the cardboard.
  • Use your two fingers or the dinner fork to make small pom poms.
  • For really giant pom poms, take an entire skein of yarn and tie it in the middle. Cut the ends and fluff it up!
  • Use a double knot around the wrapped yarn when tying your pom poms to make them more secure.
  • Don’t have enough yarn? Combine yarns to make a more interesting pom pom.
  • If you are going to buy pom pom makers, invest in Clover pom pom makers. Some of the off-brands break easily.
  • If you don’t have a really sharp pair of scissors, buy some. I love my Karen Buckley Perfect scissors. If I’ve misplaced them, I use my 5-inch Kai scissors or my Fiskars spring-action scissors.
