Here's How to Make a Beaded Fabric Cuff with Peyote Bezel Cabochon with Bead Embroidery.
Materials
- Cabochon, ceramic or stone, sized for your design
- E-6000 glue
- Fabric (cotton works well) 8” x 3” (makes 7 1/2" finished cuff)
- Seed beads to coordinate with cabochon and fabric. Include size 11 cylinder beads (Delicas), 11/0 and 15/0 seed beads. Include other beads as desired.
- Shank Button for clasp
- Fast2Fuse, 7” x 2” or non-fusible beading foundation and fusible web
- Ultrasuede, 7” x 2”
- Fine tip marking tool. The line should be fine enough to be covered by a row of size 11 Delica beads.
- Your favorite nylon beading thread
Tools
- Size 10 or 12 beading needles
- Sharp scissors and thread snips
- Bead mat
- Bead scoop (optional, but makes clean up easier)
- Iron, pressing surface, and pressing sheet (if using fusible)
- Good lighting!
Instructions
- Gather tools and materials as listed above.
- Following product instructions, center the Fast2Fuse on the wrong side of your fabric and fuse in place. Be sure to use a pressing sheet to protect your iron and pressing surface.
- Place your cabochon and secure with a peyote stitch bezel. For detailed instructions, see Bead Embroidery: How to Bezel a Cabochon
- Draw your own design lines or use the printed fabric design to embellish your cuff with lines of back stitch. For detailed instructions, see Bead Embroidery: How to Back Stitch Beads on Fabric.
- When you have completed your bead embroidery for the front of your bracelet, fold the fabric edged to the back and fuse in place, using just the point and side edge of your iron, Cover the area you are not fusing with a nonstick pressing sheet to protect your iron if you want to be extra careful, Tuck in corners as you go. If the fabric has a mind of its own, fold it back and take a couple of stitches.
- Here is the back of the cuff, looking a bit of a mess, but no worries. We're going to cover that up in a minute. Mark the center of one short edge for placing the button half of your bead-and-button clasp.
- Securely stitch the button (I used a vintage Czech glass button) through all layers. Knot the thread on the back side a couple of times to make sure it is secure.
- Using your nonstick pressing sheet, fuse the Ultrasuede to the back of your cuff, matching edges. The pressing sheet will prevent your iron leaving marks on the Ultrasuede. (Ask me how I know.)
- Your bead embroidery fabric cuff is now ready for its beaded edge treatment.
- Brick stitch makes a nice, uniform edge to beaded pieces. For a refresher on beaded brick stitch, see Bead Embroidery: How to Bead a Brick Stitch Edge.
- Picot is another option for an edge stitch. This technique is based on brick stitch, but add the decorative picot element. For a refresher on adding picots to your beaded edge, see Bead Embroidery: How to Bead a Picot Stitch Edge.
- When you reach the center of the short end opposite your button, it's time to add button loop closure. Sizing this takes some trial and error, but it's worth fussing with it to get the right fit and a secure closure. String enough seed beads (I used size 11) to wrap around the button and allow the cuff to rest comfortably on your wrist. You may have to add and/or remove beads a few times until the fit is just right. You want to be able to slip the loop over the button with one hand. If you need a much longer loop for a good fit, I recommend adding length with a single column of beads at the base of the loop. To stitch the loop, string the needed number of beads and pass back through the first bead (or column of beads if you added length) and take a stitch through the cuff layers. Make at least 2 more passes through all beads for a strong closure.
- Continue beading your edge treatment stitches all around until your border is complete. Knot the thread a couple of time on the back of the piece. Bury the thread tail and trim.
- Here is the back of the completed bead embroidered fabric cuff. Ultrasuede makes a nice, soft lining against the skin.
- Your Bead Embroidered Fabric Cuff with Peyote Bezel Cabochon is ready to wear!
