How to Make Sugar Cookie Felt Christmas Tree Ornaments
Use your Christmas cookie cutters to make these adorable ornaments to adorn your tree this year! Have fun adding beads and sequins to embellish these festive ornaments.
The white felt is like the frosting on your cookie, the tan felt is the perfectly baked sugar cookie and beads and sequins are the sprinkles to make your cookies festive!
Materials
- One (1) 8 x 10 piece of white felt
- One (1) 8 x 10 piece of tan felt
- 6-inch piece of ribbon or string
- Assortment of beads and sequins
- White thread or embroidery floss
- Tan thread or embroidery floss
- Beading thread
- Small bit of polyfil batting
Tools
- Hand sewing needle
- Beading needle
- Scissors
- Removable fabric marker, I used a Frixion pen
Instructions
- Get out your Christmas cookie cutters, your removable fabric marker and trace the design onto the white felt piece. Trace the design on the outside of the cookie cutter.
- Here is the design traced onto the white felt.
- Cut the design out of the white felt and layer it on the tan felt.
- Using your scissors, cut out two layers of the tan felt about 3/8" larger than the white felt.
- Here are the supplies you'll need to make your ornament: one cut out white ornament, two cut out tan ornaments slightly larger, a 6-inch length of ribbon or string, and an assortment of beads and/or sequins. I like to use specific beading thread to sew the beads and i used one strand of six-strand embroidery floss to stitch the ornament pieces together.
- Using your beading thread and a beading needle, sew beads, bugles and sequins to the white felt. I have a small bag of beads left over from projects that is perfect for this! A variety of beads, just like sprinkles on cookies.
- Keep adding beads until you feel your cookie is decorated.
- Then, layer the beaded white felt on top of one of the pieces of tan felt. I like to use one strand of six-strand embroidery floss to stitch the frosting to the cookie. Clips make it easier to hold the layers together while you are stitching.
- Begin stitching the white felt to the tan felt with small stitches.
- Here is a close-up of stitching the white to the tan felt.
- Here is the back of the top layer of the tan felt when the white felt is stitched to it.
- Now, layer the back tan felt piece and the cut piece of ribbon with your beaded cookie top. Again, use clips to hold the layers together. I used one strand of six-strand embroidery floss that matches the tan felt.
- We'll need to leave an opening to add a bit of polyfill batting to fluff up the ornament. Start stitching above the clip to the right middle.
- Stitch until the top of the ornament. Add the ends of the hanging loop between the layers of the tan felt and stitch the loop in place.
- Continue stitching the two layers of tan felt together around the edge until you get around to the other side of the bottom of he ornament. I'm leaving an opening between the two clips to add some polyfil into the ornament.
- Take a little bit of polyfill and put inside the two layers of tan felt.
- Here is a side view of the opening with the polyfil.
- Continue stitching the edges to the opening closed to finish the ornament.
- Here is the finished sugar cookie ornament.

Tips and ideas for making sugar cookie felt tree ornaments
- Use matching thread or embroidery floss the sew the white felt frosting to the tan felt cookie, and to sew the two layers of the tan felt together.
- Pull out leftover beads from projects, or those little bags with extra beads you get when you purchase a beaded item. A variety of beads looks more like the colored sprinkles that decorate cookies at the holidays!
- If you’d like, try some festive holiday sequins to decorate your felt cookies!
- Use beading thread to sew your beads to the white frosting felt. Beading thread is much stronger than sewing thread and your beads will be secure for years to come!
- No ribbon? No problem! Find a scrap of string, make your own fabric twine, or a piece of rick rack. Be creative with what you have!
- These ornaments make great holiday package decorations! Loop them into the bow when you are wrapping gifts. Use a permanent fabric pen, like the Pentel Gel Fabric Pen to write on the back of the ornament.
