Paper Pieced Kaleidoscope Quilt

Paper Pieced Kaleidoscope Quilt

Art Quilts Foundation Piecing Sewingby Chardel Blaine

Oh, how I love designing in Electric Quilt! The drawing tools helped me design one side of a paper-piecing-friendly 60-degree triangle and mirror-image it. I made six of them. I let the colors surprise me, selecting fabrics as I went along. I hoped to achieve enough value variation to accent the intricate piecing. Batiks and hand-dyed fabrics provide saturated color for Paper Pieced Kaleidoscope Quilt because the dye penetrates the fibers.

About Foundation Paper Piecing

With foundation paper piecing, you print the pattern on paper, then sew the fabric to the printed pattern. It’s easier to piece a complex design with printed sewing lines! As a result, everything fits, which might not happen if all these pieces were sewn from templates – there would be a lot of bias on these odd shapes and seam allowances would have to be perfect! You remove the paper after piecing and before quilting.

60-degree triangles also form the background. I added little bits to the corners of kaleidoscope fabrics to some of the triangles to get the confetti-like color in background.

I quilted Paper Pieced Kaleidoscope Quilt on my Bernina sewing machine using the indispensable walking foot.
