Materials
- Eight (8) feet of 3mm macrame cording or yarn (or three (3) yards)
Tools
- Scissors to cut the cording or yarn
Instructions
- Start by cutting the macrame cord. Cut one piece 12-inches long for the tree trunk and seven (7) pieces of cord 6-inches long.
- Take the longer piece and fold it in half lengthwise. Tie a knot about 1-inch from the folded end. This will be our center cord that I refer to as the tree trunk.
- Now we are ready to add some tree limbs to the ornament. Take two (2) of the short pieces of macrame cord. Fold them in half and place one loop on one side of the trunk and one on the other side of the trunk. One should be under the trunk and one above the trunk. Thread the ends through the folded end loops.
- Pull the ends of the cords to tighten the knot around the tree trunk. Interlooping the two pieces of cording around a center cord with this type of knot is called a Lark's Head knot in macrame.
- Now you are ready to make the second knot. Take the next two 6-inch strips and make loops like we did above to make the second tree limb for the ornament.
- Continue adding the limbs until all seven (7) limbs have been tied to the tree trunk.
- Take your scissors and trim the tree limbs to be a tree shape.
- And, here is your finished macrame tree ornament.

What size cording can I use to make this macrame tree ornament?
You can use any cording or yarn to make this simple ornament. Here is one I made with a pale green macrame cord 6mm size. Since the cording is so much larger, I cut the tree trunk at about 16-inches and the tree limbs at about 8-inches. Instead of tying a knot, I used a macrame wooden bead for the top of the tree. Also, I ‘unwound’ the cord/rope to fluff out the tree limbs.
Here is another version made from chunky yarn. With the yarn, it was easy to tie off the top of the tree to make the hanging loop.
What are other variations that I can make of this ornament?
When you make the loops to knot around the tree trunk, you can put the loops in the same direction each time, or switch which one is the upper loop and the lower loop with each limb. See the three trees in the image below. The smallest one near the bottom of the image between the other two trees was made by switching the upper loop from the left on one limb to the right on the next limb. The two larger trees the loops were placed the same adding each limb.
Can I make these different sizes?
Yes! Make your tree trunk longer and add more limbs. These are so easy to make, try different cords and yarns and see what you like the best!

- Add a wooden ring with a Lark’s head knot to the center cord as a hanger.
- Use a fine tooth rat tail comb to open and fluff out the cording, if you like the fluffy look.
