Why not paint your back door with blackboard paint and make a place for your budding artists to show their talents? A blackboard back door also is a great place for those last minute reminders when you’re walking out for the day.
My back door leads to the garage and my husband and I come and go through it every day. It used to be a plain panel door and did nothing to inspire me. My front door is usually decorated with a wreath, why not do something fun with the back door?
Recently I painted it with blackboard paint. It takes several coats, be sure to follow the instructions on the can. Once painted, my two granddaughters took care of decorating it. Emma drew the tree while Brynley encouraged her to add a kitty cat in the knot hole and birds. They both signed their names to their masterpiece.
Now I smile every time I come and go. Maybe they will come draw me a new picture soon. Enjoy!
How to paint a chalkboard door
Start by cleaning your door really well and letting it dry really well. Using painter’s tape, tape off the edges, door moulding, hinges and handle. If it is easy for you, it’s recommended to take the handle off the door.

You can use a brush or a roller. If you use a brush, you can paint directly from the can which saves a bit in clean up. 🙂 Paint the entire door and let it dry for at least an hour. If you live in a humid climate, I’d give it 4-5 hours to make sure it is really good and dry. Then, give it a second coat. I went ahead and waited again and gave it a third coat. I had plenty of paint and wanted a good chalkboard finish the to door.
Chalkboard paint does need to be stirred often to keep it from separating. I would gently stir before putting more paint on my brush. Shake the can before using, per the directions on the paint can.
