I made this Double Fleece Blanket for my niece for a Christmas present. This is a quick and easy gift to make. Pick out fabrics that work for your recipient! Favorite football team, character, cheerful flowers, or bright solids. Fleece comes in lots of prints and colors – even fun holiday fabrics!
These make great gifts! I picked out two fleece fabrics that I thought she’d like – a purple flower print and pink and white polka dots.
This is sometimes called a fleece tie blanket because you tie two layers of fabric together. All you need is two pieces of 1-1/2 yards of fleece for this no sew blanket. There are different types of fleece and they all work and all make a cozy blanket! Popular fabrics are anti-pill polar fleece or blizzard fleece.
How to Make a Double Fleece Blanket
Make your own double fleece blanket with two pieces of fleece. This is a super easy project. Great for a weekend project for you and perfect for older children to help with looping the edges.
These cozy fleece blankets have a fringed edge. You'll want a nice flat surface for working and tying the square knots.

Here are our step-by-step instructions:
Materials
- 1-1/2 yards of fabric EACH of two (2) fleece fabrics of your choice. This makes a blanket about 60" long and 48" wide - perfect for a throw blanket.
- One index note card or piece of other heavy card stock. Cereal box cardboard works, too!
Tools
- Fabric scissors
- OPTIONAL: Rotary cutter, cutting ruler and cutting mat
Instructions
- The first thing you'll do is trim the selvage edge off of the fleece with your scissors. This is the edge that looks a little different. Sometimes the selvage can be a bit stiff or rough - not as nice and soft as the cut edge of the fleece. You can do this with a pair of scissors or with a rotary cutter and cutting mat.
- Stack your two pieces of fleece on top of each other and trim them, making sure they are the exact same size. This can be a chore if you are making a really big two-sided blanket - you might need to lay them out on the floor.
TIP: You will want a nice big work surface where you can lay the fabrics flat to work.
NOTE: Fleece generally does not have a right or wrong side to the fabric. They are usually the same on both sides. Check and make sure you layer the pieces of fabrics with the WRONG sides together.
Once your fabrics are nice and flat and the same size, we'll begin cutting the fringe, which is how the blanket is secured. I cut a piece of card stock from an index card that is 1" wide by 5" long.
Since my fringe will be 5" long, I need to cut out a 5" square on each corner of the layered pieced of fleece to make the square corners.
Then, begin cutting your fringe. Lay your 1" wide index paper pattern down along the edge of the fabric and begin cutting through both layers. - After I make the first cut, I like to fold the fringe back. This makes each cut easier to line up and each piece of fringe is ready for you to cut the slit that you will use to secure the fringe in the next two steps.
- Make a small slit in the center of each piece of fringe, right at the fold. Make sure to cut through both layers of fleece. Can you see the little cut I made? You want it to be about a 1" total opening when open, so cut into the fold about 1/2".
- Now to finish the blanket. Take the end of the cut fringe and turn it into the cut hole. Pull gently to secure the edge of the blanket making tie knots.
- Here is a close-up of turning the fringe into the cut hole.
- Pull it secure!
- Here I am working around the edges of the blanket. A perfect project while watching a show.
- And, the finished blanket! Ready to roll up in a gift bag for my niece.

Here is another double fleece blanket I made with the same process. I love the way the turquoise back makes a nice rib when I turned the fringe. Try different fabric combinations and have some fun with the different prints available in fleece!
Here is another picture of the latest tied fleece blanket – cute owl fleece for the front side with turquoise as the 2nd layer on the back side. Making a two-layer fleece blanket makes it super warm. What’s great about fleece blankets is they can be tossed in the washer and dryer when they get messy or dirty! Perfect for people of any age!
These easy blankets can be made in any size. Generally fleece comes 60-inches wide. If you purchase one yard of each fabric that would make a blanket that is 36-inches x 60-inches, good for a toddler. For a child size blanket, I’d purchase at least 1/-1/4 yard piece of fleece. To make larger blankets, you’ll need additional fabric.
