How to Quilt

Category: How to Quilt

So, you want to learn how to quilt. We’ve got you covered with our Quilting 101 articles! Each article covers a different topic in depth, helping you learn how to make a quilt from start to finish!

Learn the basics of patchwork and quilting. Then, search through our free quilt block patterns to get started.

The basic supplies you need to get started are needle, thread, fabric and scissors. Our ancestors made quilts all by hand – cutting the pieces with scissors, then sewing together by hand and hand quilting. It’s a great way to get started (if you’d like).

Today’s quilters have a variety of tools to make patchwork easier – sewing machines, rotary cutters, cutting mats and quilters rulers. The most important tool (in my opinion) for quilting is a good iron and pressing surface. Oh, and the second most important tool? A seam ripper! All you need are some basic tools to get started.

There are a variety of quilting techniques. Try them all and find which you prefer.

You don’t need to start with a big quilt. Start with a small quilt to get comfortable with the terminology and quilting process. Small projects are a great way to try out basic techniques.

Ready to make your first quilt? Start with a simple patchwork quilt. Browse through our easy quilt patterns and find one that you like.

If you can sew a straight line, you can make a quilt!

Take the time to look through our articles that cover the basics of quilting – our beginner’s guide to quilting! In no time, you’ll have a finished quilt!
