Embroidery: Stacked Arrowhead Stitch

The Stacked Arrowhead Stitch is a variation of the basic Arrowhead Stitch, just worked vertically instead of horizontally. This is also known as the Vertical Arrowhead Stitch.

The Stacked Arrowhead Stitch can be worked close together or with gaps for different looks. It is used quite often to make leaves. It can be done on counted cross stitch Aida cloth or on woven fabric. The key is to have straight lines for your stitches to follow.

How to embroider the Stacked Arrowhead Stitch

Start by coming up at the end of the ‘arrow’ then bring the needle down at the top of the arrow. then bring the needle back up at the bottom of the arrow, and down at the arrow head.

Here is the 2nd stitch. Needle up at the point of the arrow, and down at the arrow head.

Continue in this same method for the entire line.

Then, I wanted to try a leaf, since the Stacked Arrowhead is used often for leaves.

For a leaf, you start with one straight stitch, and then begin your Stacked Arrowhead Stitches. This forms the point of your leaf.

I learned that leaves look better with the stitches close together. Here is my 4″ sample of the variations of the stitch.

And, a close-up . . . just like the old saying – keep at it and you’ll get better. My last leaf is the best of my practice on this stitch. 🙂
