There was a day when a coworker and I were bored and we had these extra nutcrackers lying around and we had just opened a production of Les Miserables. So of course we began transforming a soldier and the couple from “American Gothic” into Javert, Fantine, and Jean Valjean to make Les Miserables nutcrackers!
Fantine and Jean Valjean were easy – just repainted the clothes and added accessories. Valjean got a silk bow tie/ascot thing and Fantine got a locket. How amazing is it that we have a very tiny locket just waiting for a project to be used on? I even printed a picture of Cosette and placed it inside.
Javert was a bit more challenging with his three-pointed hat and coat-tails. The hat is felt and pinched and played with until it did what I wanted. I used hot glue to secure the points. The coat is fused navy blue fabric and a thinner red for the lining. That I draped directly onto his little nutcracker body and wrapped the sleeves with the same navy fabric so the color and texture would match. Hot glue is my friend.
