Materials needed:

  • Fabric for Hat (plus lining) 1/2 yard of fabric at least 45 inches wide
  • Matching Bias tape
  • Craft wire (12 gauge recommended)
  • Interfacing (Timtex or other heavy interfacing recommended)

Measure and cut 3 teardrops of hat fabric, plus 1 tear drop of lining, and 1 teardrop of interfacing. For my hat, the teardrop shape is 10 inches wide and 12 inches long.

Layering fabric and interfacing for hat teardrops for the puffed riding hat

Step 1

Sandwich one (1) layer of interfacing between two (2) of the hat fabric teardrops (right side facing out) and sew the outer edge of the teardrop for the brim.

Sew the remaining hat fabric and lining teardrops (right sides facing out) for the puff top.

Step 2

Measure and cut the hole for your head on the brim piece. I measured 2 inches from the sewn edge and marked an oval, then cut with a blade.

Step 3

Trimming the hat to make the tear drop shape

Cut the front of the oval with a sharp corner, at the end of the ‘tear drop’ shape. This gives the hat the right shape.

Step 4

Loosely hand stitch the puff top and gather to fit in the brim hole.

Step 5

Pin and sew the puff top to the brim of the riding hat.

Step 6

Measure and shape the wire for the hat brim (optional – the material & interfacing may be stiff enough for your preference). Cut the wire and twist, tape, or solder into a single piece.

Step 7

Sew the bias tape along the edge of the brim (over the wire, if used). Sew the bias tape along the inside of the brim and puff top for a finished look.

Step 8

Add feathers, ornaments, pins, and ribbons for a personalized hat!
