This Garden Gnome was a requested project, and one of my largest ceramic projects I have ever done. This garden gnome stands over 18″ tall and holds a sign that says “Lessez les bontemps roulez”. Translation from French: Let the good times roll!” That is a favorite motto in New Orleans, where I grew up.
This little gnome, like “real” gnomes, is small in stature and guards the treasures of the earth. They usually live underground in their world, so it’s special to have a gnome who spends his days and nights out where people can see him and enjoy his company. Gnomes have been with us for hundreds of years, so it’s surprising that we don’t see them more often. A bit braver in recent years, more and more gnomes appear above ground and take up their sentry posts protecting gardens. Some have even been spotted indoors. Does your home need a gnome? They are difficult to build from clay, but maybe you could make a spunky gnome art doll. He could be any size.
I’m not normally a figurative artist, so my proportions are a little off. But he was fun and challenging to build.
