Ceramic Chess Set
One year for Christmas I made my dad a ceramic chess set. I used a low fire porcelain because I really wanted to use Amaco’s Old Pewter/Gun Metal Black glaze. (The name of the glaze changed but the formula is the same.)
I wanted the whole thing to be self contained so I built the board as two parts so all the pieces would store inside.
Here’s the thing, clay moves. It moves when you are building, when drying, and when firing. There are ways to make flat and square ceramic pieces, but it is very difficult. My little box did warp and crack and break during the final firing. So the day before Christmas my mother and grandmother were helping me epoxy pieces of sheet metal and 1/4″ plywood to repair the box.
I covered all the repairs with blue velvet and felt.
The finished ceramic chess set is ready for a match! Check mate!
